There Is No Off Season

Why Q4 is the biggest opportunity brands keep leaving on the table

Every winter, brands quietly pull back. They assume the Strava community goes quiet too: shorter days mean less movement, less opportunity, less reason to show up.

The data says otherwise. Athletes don't stop moving in Q4. They adapt, and every adaptation is a moment for a brand to show up.

We have broken down what that looks like, region by region, from the first dark commute in November to the moment hard work pays off in February, so you can enrich your Q4 media plans now.

November: Winter Changes Movement. It Doesn't Stop It.

Clocks go back. Commutes get dark. This isn't athletes giving up. It's athletes reshaping when and how they move.

The Season of Consistency

People adapt how they move.

Rather than giving up on movement, they find new windows to train.

Rather than giving up on movement, they find new windows to train.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Meet athletes in the transition, not after it. Show up with content and product that fit their new rhythm, think lunchtime workouts, indoor training, gear built for after dark, and you're already part of the routine before resolution season even starts.

December: Unwrapped On Christmas. Decided In November.

Gear purchases aren't impulse buys. Athletes are investing in staying consistent through winter, and the decision is made long before Christmas morning.

THE PROOF

Rapha didn't sell gear here. They built a ritual around it with The Festive 500 Strava Challenge (500km, Dec 24–31, every year since 2015) turning the year's busiest week into something 264,700+ cyclists chose to do anyway.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Black Friday is the opening, not the close. A campaign that only runs sale week lands after the decision's already been made. Build visibility through November instead, so your brand is already the obvious choice by the time Christmas Day arrives.

Presents Can Wait. The Run Can't.

As calendars fill up, movement doesn't get protected from the holidays. It becomes part of them.

THE PROOF

Chipotle rebranded Quitters Day as “No Quitters Day,” rewarding runners with Segment Challenges. 190,000+ athletes took part, generating 700M+ earned media impressions, and Lifestyle Bowl revenue was up 20%.

THE OPPORTUNITY

You don't need a performance angle to earn a place here. A Turkey Trot mention, a festive challenge, or a simple nod to Christmas Day activity works because the community's already turning movement into something social. Match that tone, and let the moment carry the message instead of a hard sell.

January: Don't wait for New Year. Show up for the season that builds it.

For most of the Strava community, January 1st isn't day one. It's the next chapter of a routine already built through Q4.

Celebrate Rituals

Brands that celebrate these rituals can equally become part of the holiday tradition.

How Samsung did it.

THE PROOF

The second Friday in January is sometimes called Quitter’s Day, as a significant number of people reportedly abandon their resolutions then. To address people's need for motivation, Samsung launched its first “Be a Winner Not a Quitter” Strava Challenge right on Quitters Day. 20% of sales during the activation came through the challenge code, and a follow-up challenge drew 164,000+ participants.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Most competitors will be chasing “New Year, New You” on Quitters Day. Reward the athletes who already built momentum through Q4 instead, the way Samsung did, and your brand will stand out from a crowded field chasing resolution-season attention.

IN SUMMARY:

1. Target the switching moment directly: Most of the connected-device conversation focuses on the athletes who already have one. The real opportunity is the ones who don't, and Christmas is when they're most likely to convert.

2. Build a recurring ritual OR attach to an existing one: Winter gear isn't an impulse buy for the Strava community, it's an investment in staying consistent. The brands that win here build something athletes choose to repeat every year, not a one-off discount.

3. One narrative, not three campaigns: Plan one narrative arc across November to February instead of three isolated campaigns. The community experiences Q4 as one continuous season, adapt, invest, celebrate, keep going, and the brands that win are the ones that show up the same way.

4. Data beats discount: The most effective Q4 activations lead with an insight the community didn't expect (a stat, a pattern, a ritual) rather than a price cut. It earns attention before it asks for anything.
